An analysis of DA white dwarfs from the Hamburg Quasar Survey

چکیده
Follow-up spectroscopy of several hundred hot stars detected by the Hamburg Quasar Survey (HQS) has been carried out between 1989 and 1996. We present the analysis of 80 DA white dwarfs using model atmospheres and theoretical cooling tracks to derive the atmospheric parameters Teff and log g, masses and absolute magnitudes. The HQS turned out to be sensitive to the detection of hydrogen-rich white dwarfs in a wide temperature range, from 10 000 K upwards. Star counts within four HQS fields for magnitudes B ≤ 16. m4 exceed those from the Palomar Green survey by about 50%. The more recent observation campaigns emphasized the detection of very hot degenerates, yielding a large fraction of DA stars with Teff > 50 000 K compared to other surveys. The mean mass of our DA sample is M=0.61M , with three massive DA stars exceeding 1M and three DA stars with masses significantly below the assummed lower mass limit for single white dwarf evolution of 0.45M . Among the cool DA stars, thirteen are potential ZZ Ceti candidates because their effective temperatures lie close to the instability strip.

ASTRONOMY AND ASTROPHYSICS HS0507+0434: a double DA degenerate with a ZZCeti component
HS0507+0434 and HS 2240+1234 are two new common proper motion pairs of DA white dwarfs, discovered by the Hamburg Quasar Survey. Our model atmosphere analysis shows that HS 0507+0434A has an effective temperature of 20000K and is remarkably young (τcool <1Gyr) compared to the average cooling time of all known wide double degenerates (≈ 3Gyr). The cooler B component of HS 0507+0434 is particular...
متن کاملPG 1541 + 650 : A new ZZ Ceti white dwarf ?
We report the discovery of a new pulsating DA white dwarf, or ZZ Ceti, from the list of the Palomar-Green survey, rediscovered in the ongoing Hamburg Quasar survey (HQS). PG1541+650 is one of the ZZ Ceti candidates listed in the analysis of 80 DA white dwarfs from the HQS. With an effective temperature of 12000 K, for a surface gravity logg=7.79, it lies in the ZZ Ceti instability strip. It is ...
متن کاملCool helium-rich white dwarfs from the Hamburg/ESO survey
We present an analysis of 40 cool helium-rich white dwarfs found in the Hamburg/ESO survey. They were selected for follow-up spectroscopy because of their U −B colour below -0.18, the absence of strong absorption lines, and a continuum shape similar to that of a quasar. Effective temperatures for individual stars were determined by fitting model atmospheres of nearly pure helium with a small ad...
متن کاملHS 0146+1847 – a DAZB white dwarf of very unusual composition
HS 0146+1847, originally identified as a white dwarf candidate in proper motion surveys, was rediscovered as a candidate in the Hamburg Quasar Survey. Spectra obtained for the SPY (ESO Supernova Ia Progenitor) survey show strong Balmer and Ca II lines, suggesting a classification as DAZ white dwarf. Contrary to the objects known so far in this class, HS 0146+1847 has a helium-rich atmosphere at...
متن کاملThe stellar content of the Hamburg / ESO survey ⋆ I . Automated selection of DA white dwarfs
We describe automatic procedures for the selection of DA white dwarfs in the Hamburg/ESO objective-prism survey (HES). For this purpose, and the selection of other stellar objects (e.g., metal-poor stars and carbon stars), a flexible, robust algorithm for detection of stellar absorption and emission lines in the digital spectra of the HES was developed. Broad band (U − B, B − V) and narrow band...
